Monday 3rd November

Launch of the West Cork Telework Network by West Cork LEADER at the Sutherland Centre, Skibbereen, Co. Cork. West Cork LEADER has been providing training courses for teleworkers in four towns in the rural West Cork region during the summer of 1997. The trainees will be linked together by email in future to allow them to continue to learn from each other and to source work opportunities. There will be a video question and answer session with Alan Denbigh from the British teleworking association for the trainees, and an opportunity for all the members of the network to meet face to face and discuss future activities.

Launch of the 1997 edition of the Teleworking Handbook. This publication was highly successul in 1996, selling over 7,000 copies in Britain and Ireland. The new edition contains substantial new information covering teleworking equipment, email and online services, teleworking agreements and trade union attitudes, and information on European teleworking activities. There are plans to localise the book for publication in at least four other European countries. The handbook has been co-authored by Alan Denbigh of the British TCA and Imogen Bertin of Cork Teleworking, collaborating via email, telephone and fax to produce the 300-page book, and press in Britain and Ireland will be able to interview both authors via videoconference.

"Learning & Working in the Information Age" seminar being held in the West County Hotel, Ennis (Ireland's Information Age Town Competition Winner) on Monday, 3 November 1997 from 0930-1630.

 This seminar is being hosted by East Clare Telecottage as part of its LEONARDO Programme project LOCALNET - Local Telematics Networks for Training & Development. It will give participants the opportunities to hear about other LEONARDO, ERDF and Telematics Applications Programme projects in the Mid West of Ireland.

 The chairperson of the Ennis Information Age Town Task Force and the Head of content development at Telecom Eireann's Interactive Services Division will also be giving presentations.

Tuesday 4th November
Telework Day
ETD, in conjunction with Telecom Éireann, 3-Com and the Communications Workers Union will use the Irish media, in particular radio, to encourage a day when companies allow their staff to try teleworking. The benefits for traffic reduction and work flexibility will be stressed, and there will be competitions for the most remote telework location, features and interviews. Wednesday 5th November
Teleworking: sweatshop or social progress?
 A conference run by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions in association with the European Telework Development Project in Ireland, the Communications Workers Union, Telecom Éireann and 3-Com.
Topics covered will include current working conditions of teleworkers in Ireland, and an exploration of legal anomalies in areas such as electronic commerce, social welfare and equal opportunities. The conference will also launch a general information leaflet on teleworking produced by the European Telework Development Project and the Communications Workers Union, and hear about the new "virtual membership" for teleworkers that the union is developing.

Thursday 6th November
Seminar on teleworking for human resource managers run by IBEC, the Irish Employers organisation. IBEC has produced, in conjunction with the European Telework Development Project, a six page guideline document for HR managers covering implementation of teleworking from an HR perspective. The seminar will include practical case studies of telecommuting and opportunities to discuss the problems and opportunities of telecommuting.

The week after ETW ‘97

 

The Fifth Annual Conference of Telework Ireland will take place on 17th and 18th November 1997 in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan. This promises to be an exciting National event, which will include a high profile Launch of the Forbairt (Irish Government Development Agency) "Teleservices" brochure, compiled in conjunction with Telework Ireland. Two other major launches are also scheduled.

The theme of the Conference is "Teleworking Your Business". A panel of speakers from Ireland and the UK will address a range of subjects relating to the development and growth of businesses through the use of modern communications systems and telework methods.
