What's Happening In 1998

Festival Européen du Télétravail et des Télé-activités

2-4 April, 1998, Serre Chevalier, Hautes Alpes, France

The 3rd European Telework Festival, which took place in a French remote area, brings together most interested parties within France, with telework pioneers from all over Europe. It is a private initiative, which received political support both from the regional and French national level. DG XIII decided to support the event in 1997 and in 1998 since it represented a clear opportunity for better interaction between French concerns and experiences and those from other countries in Europe.

 The colloquium organises conference groups (series of selected lectures) and round tables. The themes for 1998 are around:

Teleactivities and Immaterial Economy;

Teleworking and territory planning;

Distance learning;

Teleworking : new jobs and new forms of organisation;

Teleworking and social integration (Sociology of telework);

Law and social issues of Teleworking.

Second International Conference on Teleworking,

Knowledge Management and Electronic Commerce

 9 -10 June, 1998, Berlin, Germany

 The 2nd International Conference on Teleworking, Knowledge Management and Electronic Commerce in Berlin is the European Forum dedicated to demonstrating the benefits and opportunities of teleworking, collaborating and trading electronically across all sectors of the economy. The impact of the increasing integration of information technologies and telecommunications in business, administrations and in the home is having a fundamental effect on how we communicate and interact. In particular, on how we work, create and manage knowledge and do business. DG XIII decided to support the conference in 1997 and 1998 since it represented a clear opportunity for better interaction between German concerns and experiences, and those from other countries in Europe and beyond.

 The use of collaboration technologies, knowledge management and electronic commerce applications opens a major area of growth for IT and networking companies and solution providers of all sizes as they realise the potential for new flexible ways of working, creating knowledge and doing business.

 Teleworking Environments

1- 4 September 1998, Turku, Finland

 The 3rd International Workshop will bring together an international and interdisciplinary gathering of researchers, academics and students, practitioners, from both employee and employer side, policy-makers and market-regulators, and suppliers of related services and products. The European Commission DG XIII decided to support this International Workshop from the start in 1996, since it promised (and proved!) to bring together a more academic, and very international, multi-disciplinary set of people for in-depth discussion of key contemporary issues in Teleworking, Alternative Officing, Virtual Organisations, Internet-based Working and Computer-Supported Distributed Work. This year's event will concentrate in particular on four environments of telework:

  • The 'decision-making environment' - assessing the costs and benefits of teleworking and integrating them into business plans;
  • The 'workplace environment' - building workplaces that embrace virtual working possibilities and provide stimulating and productive work interactions, including social and emotional support;
  • The 'management environment' - controlling, co-ordinating and integrating work processes that include remote workers, colleagues and business partners.
  • The 'societal environment' - the consequences of teleworking for society, transport and ecology.

 Telework'98

 23-25 September 1998, Lisbon, Portugal

 This 5th European Assembly on Telework and New Ways of Working will again bring together politicians, representatives from unions, employers, industry and academia, telework pioneers, and others. DG XIII initiated this event in 1994 in order to broaden the understanding and consensus on new ways of working amongst decision-makers, and as a platform for people interested in this area to meet.

 For 1998 the focus is on the mobility of work, and quality of life. Under the theme "Be there from Anywhere" the freedom emerging for the individual in choosing the place to be, more and more independent from the office location, developments in the social framework as well as in supporting technologies and services will be highlighted.
